Displaying pretext
It could get quite interesting Saturday night on Long Island when the Flyers and Islanders meet. Last Saturday, the two teams combined for 120 penalty minutes during a game in Philadelphia and the Flyers' Danny Briere wound up being suspended for three games for his lacrosse-style whack to the head of the Islanders' Frans Nielsen.
The most memorable image from the fracas was Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro chasing Briere and Dan Carcillo around the ice while being talked down by Flyers defensive Chris Pronger.
"He didn't want me to go after Briere," DiPietro said. "I wanted anybody else, except (Pronger)."
Briere said he felt DiPietro was frustrated by a poor performance in a game the Flyers won 6-1. Nevertheless, that didn't stop Carcillo from wanting a piece of DiPietro.
