Every Monday until the end of the season, Hockey Prospectus will provide updated Player Power Rankings for the top 10 skaters and top five goalies in the NHL based on HP's proprietary value metric, GVT, a statistic that combines player contributions in all aspects of the game, including defense and the shootout.
Although some wrote him off after a slow start to the season, Alex Ovechkin has returned to his high-scoring ways with a vengeance. Once again shooting (and scoring) at a torrid pace, Ovi jumps onto the Player Rankings leader board at No. 6.
Player Power Rankings: Skaters
are through April 7.
The injured Crosby still has an outside chance of maintaining
his GVT lead until the end of the regular season, but all that matters to
Penguins fans is what GVT he achieves in the playoffs.
Kunitz now will be expected to shoulder even more than the 18
minutes a game he has been averaging this season, especially at even
strength, where he is only 97th among league forwards in ice time.
Despite being possibly the best two-way center in the NHL, Toews
has never won the Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward and has
only been a finalist once, in 2011. Just saying.
Kane and the Blackhawks continue their superb play, but beware:
The previous time Chicago finished first overall in the regular season, in
1990-91, it was eliminated in the first round. Kane was 2 years old at the
Since 2008, Getzlaf is fourth in the league with 307 assists,
behind only world-class playmakers Henrik Sedin (371), Joe Thornton (333) and
Martin St. Louis (327).
Ovechkin has produced almost half of his season's output -- 19
points -- in the past 11 games, and he's back to doing what he's good at:
shooting a lot. He leads the league with 168 shots on goal.
With Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang injured, the field is open
for someone else to seize the defenseman scoring crown. That someone is
Subban, who leads the league, not just D-men, with an amazing 21 power-play
Tampa Bay Lightning
Stamkos remains an amazing scorer, but he has the lowest
defensive GVT among the top 15 skaters in the league.
New York Islanders
Only four players have led their team in scoring each of the
past four seasons: Eric Staal, Anze Kopitar, Ovechkin and Tavares.
When the Hurricanes miss the playoffs, they can blame their
special teams: Both their power play and penalty killing rank a miserable
28th in the league.
Player Power Rankings: Goalies
are through April 7.
New York Rangers
Lundqvist faced 131 shots in four games last week and stopped
126 of them for a .961 save percentage, enough to move the Rangers into
seventh place in the East.
San Jose Sharks
Wins are a terrible way to judge goaltenders, but it still says
something that Niemi can lead the league in wins with 19 despite playing
behind the league's sixth-worst offense.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Trading away Steve Mason confirmed Bobrovsky's role as Columbus'
goaltender of both the present and the future, and he continues to reward the
franchise's faith in him with the best save percentage in the league among
goalies who have played 20-plus games.
In the past four seasons, Rask has posted 42 GVT per 82 games, a
fantastic rate that is the best among goaltenders with 100-plus games played.
Though he hasn't played since Feb. 21, Anderson's influence
still was felt at the trade deadline, allowing the Senators to deal Ben
Bishop to Tampa Bay for young talent Cory Conacher.
